The Swamp Lake Trail is a challenging, 9.2-mile round-trip hiking and horseback riding trail.  Despite its name, Swamp Lake is a lovely little destination in the William O. Douglas wilderness near Mount Rainier. It’s popular with fishermen and backpackers, though it can be extremely buggy in early summer.

The trail leads through a mature forest, offering views of the Bumping River and potential glimpses of waterfalls. While the lake itself is marshy in areas, it is a serene spot for a break or an overnight camping trip (remember to camp at least 100 feet from the lakeshore). The trail can be a good starting point for longer trips, as it connects with the American Ridge Trail, which in turn leads toward Cougar Lake, American Lake, and the Pacific Crest Trail.

  • Trail Distance: 9.4 miles out and back from the trailhead

  • Difficulty: Moderate/Hard

  • Distance from Camp Fife: 8.4 miles.  From camp, turn right onto Bumping River Rd/NF-1800. After 8.4 miles, you will come to the Swamp Creek #970 trailhead.
