The Goat Peak Trail is a challenging out-and-back route known for its sweeping 360-degree mountain views. Once home to a U.S. Forest Service lookout, the 6,400-foot summit showcases impressive landmarks including the Goat Rocks, Bumping Lake, Mount Rainier, Fife’s Peak, and the Stuart Range, with expansive vistas stretching into the William O. Douglas Wilderness.

The trail gains more than 3,200 feet in just 3.3 miles, making it steep and relentless—the kind of climb that explains how Goat Peak earned its name. The lower portion winds through shaded forest, offering brief breaks from the ascent, while the upper section emerges into open terrain with unobstructed, panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness.

  • Trail Distance: 6.5 miles out and back from the trailhead

  • Difficulty: Hard, due to the elevation gain

  • Starting Point: Near Hell’s Crossing campground on Hwy 410. The trailhead is on the left across from the campground.

  • Distance from Camp Fife: 13.3 mile.  From camp, turn left onto Bumping River Rd/NF-1800. After 8.4 miles, turn left on onto WA-410 W.  After 4.9 miles the trailhead will be on the left, across from Hell’s Crossing campground.

  • Parking Pass/Entry Fee: Northwest Forest Pass
  • Established Campsites: No
